Welcome to the first edition of my studio newsletter. I hope to publish this letter several times a year to keep you informed of recent and upcoming events.

Recent Events

First of all, I am happy to report that I am writing this first newsletter from Japan where I will be assisting Living National Treasure, Isezaki Jun for the next 4 months. This amazing opportunity is due to an introduction from my teacher, Jeff Shapiro whose mentor is Mr. Isezaki. For this, as well as many other things, I am indebted to Mr. Shapiro. Also, I received a grant from the Asian Cultural Council which will fund this experience. I will be maintaining a blog of my experiences and publishing pictures at my picasa page.

During the past year I have had a number of interesting exhibitions and other events. This summer I had my second solo exhibition at Anderson O'brien Fine Art. This exhibition was comprised entirely of large scale (up to 6 foot tall) vessels. Several aspects of this project were entirely nerve racking, although I learned a lot while building, firing and transporting this work. Images can be found on my website and on my obaloo site. I certainly couldn't have done this project without the help of my studiomates and friends and I believe you all know who you are. In particular, I would like to thank Josh Copus for letting me monopoloize his kiln.

In addition to this exhibition, I had a solo show at the Asheville Area Arts Council in which I exhibited sculpture and installation, in addition to vessels, for the first time. Images of the new sculptural and installation work can be found on my website.
Besides the solo exhibitions, my work was shown in a number of juried and invitational group exhibitions, the particulars of which you can also find on my website.

My work is currently being featured in Southern Living Magazine's Davidson Gap Idea House. Several pieces of mine can be seen by taking the virtual tour. Also, see if you can spot the work of my studiomates Josh Copus, Kyle Carpenter, and Matt Jacobs. If you are or will be in western North Carolina, the house will be open for actual tours through Oct 12.

I was admitted into the Craft Guild of the Southern Highlands during the past jury process and as result I participated in the July Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands. This event is held in the middle of July and October each year (exact dates vary and can be found on the website listed above) and I plan to participate in the future, although I will be in Japan for the Fall 2008 fair. In addition, through the a Guild exhibition, I will have one piece at the Appalachian Regional Commission in Washington D.C. for the next year.

During March I helped teach a kiln building workshop at the Laurelville Mennonite Church Center with Dale Huffman and Justin Rothshank. This workshop was a joint project between the Church Center and the Union Project in Pittsburgh. Although I have led or helped with over two dozen kiln buildings, this was by far the fastest kiln building and one of the smoothest. Some image and plans can be found here

This last year I taught several courses at the Odyssey Center for the Ceramic Arts including handbuilding and wood firing. I plan to submit class proposals to teach again when I return from Japan.

After several false starts I finally have a functioning website, courtesy of Robert Zimmerman, which I invite you investigate at your leisure. All in all it has been a very exciting and very busy year. Thanks to all of you for your continued support. I could not do this without you.
